The kitchen is the heart of the home and from time to time, it needs a quick refresh. We spend so much time in the kitchen that if it is organized and easy to find things, you’ll be less stressed in there! Going to find something and opening drawers of chaos will not leave you feeling too happy. Below are three areas that organizing can make a quick refresh of your kitchen. Even though none of them take too long to do, if you’re pressed for time, do them on different days. You’ll be glad you did!
Junk Drawer Revolution!
Let’s begin with the messiest spot…the junk drawer. Try to limit yourself to just one junk drawer. If you have two drawers full, maybe once you sort everything, you’ll be able to reassign some items to outside of the kitchen. Remember, even though it’s usually called a junk drawer, it doesn’t have to be complete chaos. It can be organized!
- Consider buying small bins or a junk drawer organizer to help keep the items organized within the drawer. Be sure to measure the drawer before purchasing bins.
- Pull the contents out piece by piece and sort them on the counter (batteries, pens, coupons, small tools, etc.)
- Only leave items there that you would use on a somewhat regular basis. (The special tool that came in the house to fix one item months ago needs to go back in the garage and so on.)
- Batteries are convenient there, but if there’s more than two people in the household, the batteries should be delegated to another space. The laundry room is a great place for batteries and lightbulbs.
- Put the organizing bins in and put the sorted items in their new home!
Food Storage Re-do!
Now, it’s time to attack the food storage container turmoil! Bring out all the plastic food storage containers you have (remember to pull from the dishwasher, too). As you pull them out of the cabinet, place square lids together and round lids together and so on.
- Begin sorting by size, nesting any that match.
- Place the matching lids on top.
- Recycle the lids that don’t have a bottom and the bottoms that don’t have a lid.
- Make three groups of containers on the counter: large near each other, medium, and small.
- Then, consider the most you’ll need for your biggest dinner. What numbers work for you? (Example: 4 large, 8 medium, 6 small) This allows for a couple to be in use in the refrigerator or dishwasher.
- Purge “loner” sizes because nesting ones take up less space.
Your goal is to have enough food storage containers, but an easy-to-find and manageable set.
Pantry Perfection!
It’s time to take a look in the pantry at those chips and snacks. These two sections tend to have a lot of items. Consider getting bins to house each of these categories. If you have all the chip bags in one tub, it is easier to pull it in and out to see what you have. Same with snacks. It also gives the pantry a cleaner look when the chips and snacks are not loose and wild!
Having these three areas of your kitchen organized will feel so good when you need something from there! If you’d rather not refresh the kitchen on your own, just give us a shout!
